At nearly 1,900 metres elevation, Nuwara Eliya feels worlds away from the tropical coast. Cool air, colonial bungalows, and rolling tea estates carpet the hills in deep green — this is the heart of Ceylon tea country.
Whether you are a dedicated tea enthusiast or simply love scenic drives, the region rewards slow exploration.
Tea factory visits
Working factories such as those near Pedro Estate or Mackwoods (now Damro) walk visitors through withering, rolling, fermenting, and drying — ending with a fresh cup on the veranda. Tours take 45–60 minutes and are best in the morning when production is active.
Wear a light jacket; factory floors and highland weather can be surprisingly cool even when the coast is hot.
Scenic spots around town
- Gregory Lake — boating, horse rides, and lakeside walks
- Horton Plains & World’s End — half-day trek with dramatic cliff views (start early)
- Ramboda Falls — one of the island’s most photographed waterfalls
- Hakgala Botanical Gardens — roses and temperate plants rare elsewhere in Sri Lanka
Practical tips
Nuwara Eliya is busiest in April during Sri Lankan New Year and on weekends when domestic travellers escape the heat. Book boutique bungalows early for peak season. Our hill-country packages combine tea experiences with the scenic train to or from Ella.
