Ella has grown from a quiet railway stop into one of Sri Lanka’s most beloved hill-country towns — and for good reason. Jungle ridges, waterfall trails, and the famous Nine Arch Bridge create a compact playground for hikers and photographers.
Two nights is ideal to enjoy the pace without feeling rushed.
Nine Arch Bridge
Built entirely of stone and cement without steel, the bridge curves through dense greenery as trains cross between Ella and Demodara. Check the daily timetable and arrive 20–30 minutes early to hike down to the viewpoint before a blue carriage appears around the bend.
The walk from Ella town takes 25–35 minutes along the tracksides — wear grippy shoes, especially after rain.

Where to stay and eat
Guesthouses and boutique hotels line the main ridge road with terrace views over the valley. Ella’s café scene serves good Sri Lankan curry, wood-fired pizza, and fresh juices — perfect after a morning hike.
