Sri Lanka packs tropical coasts, cool highlands, and dry-zone safaris into one small island — so your bag needs a little flexibility. Most travellers do fine with a medium suitcase plus a daypack, but what you bring matters more than how much.
Clothing essentials
- Light, breathable cotton for the coast and Cultural Triangle
- A warm layer for Nuwara Eliya and Ella — evenings can drop to 10–15 °C
- Modest outfits for temples — shoulders and knees covered; a sarong is useful
- Comfortable walking shoes for Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, and city exploring
- Sandals or flip-flops for beaches and hotel pools
Health, sun & safari
High-SPF sunscreen, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle are daily essentials. For safaris, neutral-coloured clothing works best — avoid bright white that can startle wildlife. A light dust mask helps on dry park tracks.
- Carry any prescription medicines in original packaging
- Basic first-aid: plasters, antiseptic, rehydration salts
- Power adapter: Type D/G sockets (UK-style three pin) are standard
- Universal adapter recommended for multi-device charging
Documents and money
Keep your passport, ETA/visa confirmation, and travel insurance details accessible. Sri Lanka uses LKR, USD, and EUR — our guides can advise on cash versus card for your route. A dry pouch protects documents during beach and boat days.
