Unawatuna & Mirissa: South-Coast Beaches, Swimming & Sunsets

Golden bays, calm swimming seasons, beach cafés, and coconut palms — how to plan the perfect south-coast beach day between Galle and Tangalle.

By Ceylonova Editorial · Ceylonova Global Tours

South of Galle Fort, the coastline softens into curved bays of pale sand and turquoise water. Unawatuna and Mirissa are the two names most travellers know — each with a distinct mood, from relaxed family swimming to bohemian beach bars and whale-watching departures.

Both are easy day trips from Galle or overnight stops on a coastal route toward Tangalle.

Unawatuna

Unawatuna’s sheltered bay is one of the safest swimming beaches on the south coast from November through April. Reef-protected water stays relatively calm, and the main strip has restaurants, snorkelling trips, and sunset viewpoints on the headland.

  • Jungle Beach — short hike to a smaller cove north of the main bay
  • Best for families and first-time beach days in Sri Lanka
  • Busy on weekends — weekdays are quieter

Mirissa

Mirissa stretches along a longer curve of sand with a laid-back surf-and-café scene. It is the main base for whale-watching boats in season and has lively evenings without feeling as compact as Unawatuna.

  • Parrot Rock — small viewpoint at the eastern end of the beach
  • Whale watching: November–April (see our Mirissa guide)
  • Pair with Coconut Tree Hill near Weligama for iconic photos

Getting between beaches

Unawatuna to Mirissa is roughly 45 minutes by tuk-tuk or car along the coastal road. Our south-coast packages link Galle Fort, Unawatuna, Mirissa, and whale watching with private transfers so you can swim, explore, and return without public-bus timing stress.
